The Future of Journalism

Things you need to know

  • We’re living in a digital age

  • Technology is advancing

  • Journalism may be on the verge of the end

The world today is very digital based, kids and adults can’t go without their phones or smart devices for too long. Kids aren’t rushing to grab the newest Tiger Beat or Teen Vogue edition and adults aren’t reading their morning newspaper while they get ready for work. All the blogs and news outlets can be pulled up on their phones, so what does that mean for the future of journalism? Well journalist are trying their best to modify the world of journalism to fit the digital age even though it can be a bit tricky. “Taken together these trends are likely to lead to the biggest wave of journalistic lay-offs in years – weakening further the ability of publishers to hold populist politicians and powerful business leaders to account.” The world isn’t the same so the standards and ideologies are much different now compared to ten years ago. Technologically has taken over our world, so now journalists have to deal with limitations or compete with bots. “Then there are the robots. Companies like Narrative Science and Audience Insights are already using bots to churn out sports and financial stories for outlets like AP and the LA Times. Welcome to our new robotic overlords.” Is it possible that the profession of journalism will go extinct in the coming years of digital age ? “At the same time, there is growing concern that journalism on the internet is failing to uphold the basic values of journalism and that American democracy is increasingly at risk”. Technology advances quickly and if journalists want to keep up they’ll have to do the same.
