Inside of Journalism

Things to know

  1. Journalist need skill

  2. There are different types of journalism

  3. Covid has tested the skill of journalist

I had a very vague understanding of journalism before taking Digital Journalism, before taking this course I had little knowledge on the idea of journalism or what a journalist does. Honestly, I just thought they sat and wrote on blogs about things they’re interested in; seen it as more of a hobby than a job. Now I understand that it is much more than that. Being a journalist takes a lot of skill, patience, consistency and time. When writing things like a blog the journalist has to provide content that will be captivating to their audience. Throughout the course I learned that most of the time some stories were done just five hours before it was actually published and then there are some stories that take six months to complete. Journalism is all about using your judgement to your best ability while utilizing the resources around you, which is just one of the many things I learned from Professor Gibas this semester. The coronavirus put us in situations that we’d never thought we’d be in making abnormalities the new norm. Many had to change or adjust new ways to work, especially journalist and news anchors. Everyone’s working from home now including the news reporter and meterologist. But, watching the news it’d seem like all the fancy editing was being done in the fancy newsrooms. What’s most fascinating is most of the journalist are doing the editing at home straight from their phones, and when they do interviews they’re using all their own equipment. I’ve always been under the impression that a journalist income is in the six-figure range and unfortunately, that’s a very unrealistic income. Many of the journalists are “freelancers”, meaning they employ themselves and many times they have to get a second job just to keep the money rolling in. Journalism also isn’t just someone typing on a blog twenty-four hours a day, there’s broadcast journalism, sports journalism, digital journalism, entertainment and so on. Journalism isn’t just a profession, it’s also a skill that requires a lot of work.
