The Do's & Don'ts of News Media

Things to Know

-Videos must ALWAYS be recorded horizontally

-Through both audio and video stories you must create a captivating story.

   - Audio and Video stories must be made with precision.

My experience in Digital Journalism has shown me the ropes of how to execute material and what to expect from the viewers. When recording audio stories, make sure the interviewee's voice is projected just at the right level, not too quiet and not too loud. To avoid minor mistakes like these, it’s important for the interviewer to place the microphone on the interviewee’s mid chest area. The location of the microphone will create the perfect audio while capturing the intended nat sounds. One mistake you don’t want to make is doing a two to three minute piece and the quality turning out to be horrible. So, the first thing any interviewer should do beforehand is a soundcheck to make sure their mic quality is good and the interviewee’s voice is intact.

The work of a video story is doubled compared to an audio story just because there are so many elements. A video story should include a 5-shot rosenblum method that consists of wide, medium and close-up shots. This allows the viewers to see the elements at different perspectives. With a video story you want to be sure that you always record at a horizontal view so the video can fit the frame. While conducting the “interview” portion, the perfect frame should be captured to plug in. The microphone should be placed the same as the audio story, just make sure it is not visible. While there are much more elements to video stories, it also allows for storytelling to be creating, captivating and original !

When I did my raw elements for my video story I completely misconstrued the whole story. In order to create a good captivating story that is easy to edit that’ll create smoothness, all methods must be followed.
